Cigarettes: at a rough guess 15.

The day was mostly spent trying to get my stupid laptop to talk to the domain name server that my linux box points at....why the stupid thing doesn't work is an absolute mystery to me. After becoming utterly downheartened with this problem I decided to try my hand at getting IE to work properly with this site.

This too was a complete and utter dismal failure. Needless to say I wasn't a happy bunny. I finally got the My_eGallery thing working - so there are a few pics in there with more to come, and I also added a link to my old web site. This can be found in the main menu section.....so Jason - now will you stop moaning!!!

Aside from geeking for the day I received a few calls. "Do you want to work in Germany"...no thank you. "Do you know about ATM"...no, and my personal favourite was from Paul "What do you mean you still haven't got a job yet????"....people generally only ask this question once before suffering such a tirade of expletives that they generally want to end the call there and then. So just to put the record straight should anyone bother asking again....I'm fucking trying.

The evening was nothing too special - had a bit of a fight with Emma because I was in a bad mood. Ooops. Watched "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" on DVD - cool film! Ummm, pretty much it really.

By jingo - only 9am and I've fixed one of the bitching problems that I've been having for the past couple of days.

My laptop is now connected to the web via my Linux box. Instead of doing all that fucking about and setting up routing connections and gay internet connection sharing and various bollocky crap things like that I just:

  • Fired up a DHCP server on my Linux box.
  • Told my laptop to get all of it's network settings via DHCP.
  • Rebooted my laptop!!! Why oh why does Windows always demand a reboot if you sneeze in the general area!!!
  • Had a quick look at /var/log/messages which gave:
    Jun 22 08:54:46 localhost dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:00:86:3d:dd:6f via eth0
    Jun 22 08:54:47 localhost dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.0.16 to 00:00:86:3d:dd:6f via eth0
    Jun 22 08:54:47 localhost dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.0.16 from 00:00:86:3d:dd:6f via eth0
    Jun 22 08:54:47 localhost dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.0.16 to 00:00:86:3d:dd:6f via eth0
    Jun 22 08:56:33 localhost dhcpd: DHCPINFORM from 192.168.0.16

Told IE to auto-detect the network settings and away we went.

An upshot of all this is that I have just payed my rent! The reason I had to get Windows working on the internet is that my online bank is being a little arsey about people connecting with Linux.....wankers.
